History

Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Brawijaya (UB) started from the Physics Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering which was established in 1979. The laboratory functions as a service laboratory for the exact faculties in Universitas Brawijaya, which currently includes the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, and the Faculty of Medicine. Laboratory equipment is also increasingly complete as a result of collaboration with NUFFIC-Netherlands, IDP-Australia, and GTZ-Germany.

In connection with the formation of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Program in 1987 based on Rector’s Decree No. 070/SK/1987, the Physics Laboratory changed to a Physics Study Program and accepted undergraduate students for the first batch. The following two years, in 1989, through the Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 21/DIKTI/KEP/1989, the MIPA Program changed to the MIPA Faculty. In the end, Physics Study Program was changed to the Department of Physics by the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0371/10/1993 on October 21, 1993.

Thus, the Department of Physics compared to other departments within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is a relatively young department. Even so, the Department of Physics is growing rapidly, adapting to academic development in the fields of science and technology both at the national and international levels. In supporting the mission of Universitas Brawijaya, the Department of Physics will contribute to the development of applied sciences, especially in the medical and environmental fields.

The development of the Physics Department is supported by the emergence of various specializations, including Geophysics specialization, Biophysics specialization, Instrumentation, and Measurement specialization, Material Physics specialization, and Computational Physics & Modeling specialization. This privilege will be the root that sustains the life of the Physics Department in achieving its mission, especially in the medical and environmental fields.

The development of the Physics Department is also driven by the success of the Physics Department in obtaining development funds through various prestigious grants, including the TPSDP Grant (Technology and Professional Skills Development Program) for 4 years (2003-2006) and PHKI-B (Type B Institution-Based Competition Grant Program) for 3 years (2011-2013).

Along with the increase in human resources, the more complete laboratory infrastructure, and the high public need for the Department of Physics, in 2009 the Department of Physics opened the Master of Physics program. Two years later, in 2011, one of groups of specialization in the Department of Physics developed to new study programs for bachelor programs, namely the Geophysics Bachelor’s program. Then, on 2015 Departemen of Physics held two, i.e the Instrumentation Bachelor’s program (SK Kemenristek-Dikti No. 35 35/KPT/I/2015) and Doctoral Program (SK Kemenristek-Dikti No. 9/KPT/I/2016).

Now the Department of Physics currently manages 5 programs, namely the Physics Bachelor’s program (covering Biophysics specialization, Material Physics specialization, and Computational Physics & Modeling specialization), Instrumentation Bachelor’s program, Geophysics Bachelor’s program, Physics Masters program and Physics Doctoral program.

Where at 2021, as Brawijaya University changed its status to PTN-BH, the name of the Physics Department changed to the Physics Department.
